Mars Atmosphere Argon Density Measurement on Mer Mission
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction Using the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) (see Fig.1) on board Spirit and Opportunity rovers on MER mission, we were able to measure the argon density variation in the martian atmosphere as a function of seasonal changes. Due mainly to the variation of the temperature as a function of season on martian poles, the air mass on Mars is constantly moving from North pole to South pole in the summer, and vice versa in the winter on North pole. The freezing and melting of the CO2 in the martian atmosphere at the poles creates local atmospheric lows/highs that moves the air mass. The argon, however, due to its much lower freezing point, never freezes and stays in the air. An enhancement of Ar/CO2 mixing ratio by a factor of six at the martian South pole during the winter has been observed by the Gamma Ray Spectrometer onboard the Odyssey orbiter around Mars [1,2].

Development of software for analysing entry accelerometer data in preparation for the Beagle 2 mission to Mars: Towards a publicly available toolkit
s Abstract: We have tested techniques for turning Beagle 2’s entry accelerometer data into a T(z) profile. We reproduced the PDS results for Pathfinder. The PDS trajectory for Pathfinder appears inconsistent with its entry state. Our code is available online. Introduction: Spacecraft designed to pass through a planetary atmosphere are routinely equipped with an accelerometer. The accelerometer’...
متن کاملPrimordial argon isotope fractionation in the atmosphere of Mars measured by the SAM instrument on Curiosity and implications for atmospheric loss
[1] The quadrupole mass spectrometer of the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument on Curiosity rover has made the first high-precision measurement of the nonradiogenic argon isotope ratio in the atmosphere of Mars. The resulting value of 36Ar/38Ar = 4.2 ± 0.1 is highly significant for it provides excellent evidence that "Mars" meteorites are indeed of Martian origin, and it points to a signi...

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the topographic mapping capabilities of images from the Mars Exploration Rover 2003 (MER) mission. The 3D measurement accuracies of Pancam (panoramic camera) and Navcam (navigation camera) stereo pairs are estimated using basic photogrammetric principles. The mapping capabilities of single-site panoramas, multi-site panoramas, and wide-baseline st...

Direct measurements of the abundance of argon in the lunar atmosphere were made in 1973 by instruments placed on the Moon during the Apollo 17 mission, but the total daytime abundance is unknown due to instrument saturation effects; thus, until we are able to return to the Moon for improved direct measurements, we must use remote sensing to establish the daytime abundance. In this paper, we pre...
